Alebrijes
Frog alebrije with bird beak
Attributed by the family Felipe Linares Vargas
Descriptive title, pending confirmation by the artist
A green, dotted frog body crouches on four yellow-toed legs. The head, however, belongs to a bird: a long black beak, bright eyes, a neck scaled in blue and gold, and two large pink ears that open like petals. A thin tail, striped like a zebra’s, closes the composition.
Context
The surface is resolved with dot-and-scale painting at several scales, a recurring device in the Linares family’s cartonería for giving texture to smooth paper volumes.
