Alebrijes
Winged tiger alebrije with serpent tail
Attributed by the family Felipe Linares Vargas
Descriptive title, pending confirmation by the artist
A tiger head striped in orange and black opens in a roar that reveals tongue and fangs. The body, however, carries the jaguar’s spots; the forelegs are covered in pink scales and the wings, black and reddish, fold like those of a bird of prey. The tail coils and ends in a yellow-eyed serpent head: an animal that keeps watch in both directions.
Context
The alebrije gathers three orders of animals (feline, bird and reptile) into one body, following the principle Pedro Linares López described from the dream he had around 1936. Photographed alongside a second, frog-bodied alebrije.
